Community:

The transgendered community is growing. Or rather, it is getting easier to get in touch with it. It was always there, as islands of support groups. The internet has revolutionized the experience of being transgendered. If you want to meet others like yourself, get out of the house. Go meet people. I've been doing it for years now, and I'm consistently amazed at how welcoming the people in our community really are. Here are some good places to start:

Fall Harvest
The Southern Comfort Conference

The SCC Lounge Mailing List
Transexual Success Stories
TS Road Map
(en)Gender (Helen Boyd's Blog)

I've been a member of the Southern Belle Society for several years. Unfortunately, there aren't any other members in my immediate vicinity, but there might be some in your neck of the woods. Check them out on the web here:

If you are in my area and want to open up a local chapter, feel free to get in touch with me.

Activism:

If you are "out" of the closet at all, if you go to drag shows at gay bars or if you attend support group meetings or attend transgender conferences, you run certain risks in our society. These risks run the gamut from being assaulted by drunks homophobes to being harassed by the police all the way up to actual murder. Transgenderists are 16 times more likely to be murdered than the rest of the general population (that's three times as likely as black males, the next most at-risk population). Even if you don't go out, there are still laws in place that discriminate against you unless you lead the most milquetoast of sexual private lives. It is illegal in some jurisdictions, for instance, to own and use sex toys. I don't know about you, but this infuriates me. Rather than sit back, resigned to our fate, I say we do something about it. Activism works. Here are a couple of places to start:

GenderPac--a political action committee dedicated to lobbying lawmakers at local, state, and national levels.
The National Transgender Advocacy Coalition--also a lobbying organization, but also a legal defense organization and general advocacy group
The National Coalition for Sexual Freedom--an advocacy group for the BDSM/Leather community.

Chat Sites:

There are lots of Chat sites on the net. I don't visit many of them, because my one horse browser doesn't support Java and even if it did, my one cylinder, one hamster computer couldn't keep up with it. Sarah West's chat room is blissfully free of most of that and there are nice people there. It's formerly Debbie's Den and formerly TG Gallery Chat. Sarah has settled on a simple name that says it all...
