January 1982 - present: self-employed freelance writer/editor; to date, I have authored two textbooks on gross human anatomy, test units for the Medical College Admissions Test, an independent study course on Environmental cience, an historical monograph on osteopathic medicine, a book on thermodynamics, several plays and short stories, and over 100 published magazine and newspaper articles; I have also written over 50 songs about various scientific topics, some of which are available on CD or via digital downloading.

    · I developed, wrote, edited, supervised, and approved curricular and testing instruments in all areas of science/mathematics for a wide variety of educational levels, including the Missouri Mastery and Achievement Tests (grades 2-10), College BASE, a state-mandated (Missouri) high school exam for Personal Finance, and others, as well as ancillary material such as examiners manuals and study guides.

    · I edited a wide range of documents for others in my office, including research reports, promotional materials, etc.

    · I served as the Project Manager for the production of certification tests for the American Board of Health Physics and the National Registry of Radiation Protection Technologists, performing editorial work as well as coordinating graphics, layout, printing, and shipping of the test documents.

    · I coordinated my office's participation in a variety of state-wide (Missouri) K-12 programs, including At Risk, Titles I - VI, Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities, Missouri Comprehensive Student Needs Evaluation, School Improvement, and others.

    · I served as a science consultant for the Project Construct National Center (an early childhood and elementary education center), and provided consulting services for other Assessment Resource Center clients.

    · I wrote the science and math segments of a series of Educational Satellite Network programs on performance-based assessment.

    · I developed the Integrated Activities for Science Assessment (a series of hands-on, performance-based instruments for assessing science process skills), including leading workshops for rubric development and task scoring, and the Health Competencies Assessment Project.

    · This position required interactions with state officials, school districts, individual teachers and contract workers, various agencies and organizations, and our own eclectic internal staff; I attended and made presentations at state and national meetings on science education.

I taught Human Physiology for the Evening College Program nursing sequence, with full responsibility for developing all lectures, labs, and exams, and assigning grades.

February 1986 - February 1990: Research Specialist, Department of Physiology, University of Missouri, Columbia MO 65211; supervisor: Dr. Lee Forker, Dean of Research (retired). I performed experiments using perfused livers, hepatocyte monolayers, radioactive tracers, and mathematical modeling of membrane transport functions to study the hepatic uptake of albumin-bound ligands; I developed biologically inert systems (polyethylene membranes) as controls for the diffusion aspects of this problem and contributed to scientific papers and presentations at national meetings which described this research.

March 1985 - January 1986: Research Specialist, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Missouri, Columbia MO 65211. my research involved the characterization of components of retinal pigment epithelium utilizing electrophoresis, immunoblot, and immunocytochemistry.

August 1985 - December 1985: Assistant Professor, Biology Department, William Woods University, Fulton MO 65251. I taught Human Anatomy and General Biology, with full responsibility, including supervising lab assistants.

August 1983 - February 1985: Research Associate, Department of Pharmacology, University of Missouri, Columbia MO 65211. My research concerned the involvement of nucleosides in the metabolic processes of red blood cells.

May 1983 - August 1983: Placement Coordinator, Missouri Ozarks Economic Opportunity Corporation, Potosi MO 63664. I supervised the placement and counseling for over 80 disadvantaged youth in CETA-funded manpower programs.

May 1982 - October 1982: Park Naturalist, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Elephant Rocks State Park, Graniteville MO, and Meramec State Park, Sullivan MO. I collected and identified flora and fauna for park lists, developed naturalist programs, and led nature hikes and cave tours.
