Is this email legit?

Have you ever received a message that looked legitimate but something was telling you, “Something just doesn’t seem right here?” Seems like everyone has.   Here are a few general tips  on how to decide if the message is legitimate or one that you should just delete.

  1. Trust your gut.  If you have the feeling the message is bogus it probably is.
  2. Check to see who sent the message.  Did it come from a person in your address book? If not, its probably bogus.
  3. If there are any web URL links in the message, hover of them and see if the URL is actually pointing to the URL it claims to be. DO NOT CLICK THE LINKS!
  4. Check to see who the message was sent to.  Most SPAM messages are sent to “undisclosed recipients
  5. Does the message have an attachment?   If so, the attachment could be a virus and may cause harm to your computer.  Typically virus files are sent as .exe or .zip files.  If you’re not sure what the file is DELETE ITDO NOT OPEN IT.

Many SPAM messages are regarding Viagra, Canadian Pharmacy or a branch of the government trying to reach you.   The first two are pretty obvious but the last one can be a little more tricky at times.   However, if the government is looking for you they are probably not going to send you an email, they will most likely send you a letter or magically appear at your door step.

Regardless, if at anytime you’re not sure about an email please don’t hesitate to contact us, we’re more than happy to help.  Also, if you’re tired of fighting spam, checkout our spam and virus filtering service or just give us a call.
